Hazirah has worked in various special needs establishments, two of which is at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). She is one of the leaders of the IMH volunteer group called Heartwarmers. Hazirah provided different activities for the patients in the long-term wards every Saturday.Patients in the long-term wards include individuals with schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, and depression. She is experienced in preparing and adapting visuals and materials for the patients.These activities include arts and crafts, sports, and games. There are different activities every week; Hazirah and the other leaders would plan simple crafts for the patients to do, which will be assisted by the volunteers. Since the patients were getting through their days without much activity, she believes that her company and interactions with them would make a difference to their week.
In addition, Hazirah is also currently volunteering at IMH under the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) sector. She was selected to provide befriending support to one of the patients of IMH with severe OCD. She is to provide 1:1 support in the therapy room for the patient. During each visit, Hazirah engaged the patient in various activities to help with fine motor skills as well as encouraging the patient to have contact with several items (board games, card games, puzzles). As one of the many symptoms of OCD concerns obsessive hygiene practices, Hazirah encourages the patient to participate in various activities that allow contact with various items.
This encouragement allows the patient to be able to adjust to daily life and gradually be able to perform simple tasks without much hesitation. Another one of the many OCD symptoms includes unwanted thoughts and the constant worry of making mistakes. Therefore, she engaged the patient in games that require fast reflexes. Hazirah work alongside psychologists of IMH to help the patient adjust to daily life.
Employment with Autism Resource Centre (Singapore) has also equipped her with advanced skills, knowledge and confidence to engage students with Autism. Chirnchip is able to offer a wide range of opportunities for effective and meaningful learning experiences. This includes extensive focus for socialization to foster emotional and social competence for students with Autism within inclusive environments. She proficient in evidence-based intervention such as, Explicit Teaching and Instruction, Applied Behavioral Analysis, and Positive Behaviour Support.
Hazirah possesses experience in working with children. She worked at the Down Syndrome Association (DSA), where she befriended the children and engaged them in various activities such as circuit training during physical education, group storytelling, and activities using beads and stencils. Hazirah also facilitated an English lesson in class, providing support in the classroom, and helping children ranging from ages six to twelve with spelling and constructing sentences. Having the opportunity to interact with children has brought out a burning passion in Hazirah to work with children. She finds that the children’s joy for life is contagious and working with them has taught her to persevere. Children motivate her to be a better person and she also learned from them each day that she had volunteered at the DSA. Hazirah believes that working with children (and their families) is the most rewarding job, as she is able to see their progress that they have made and help them to achieve to their full potential.
