During her course of study, Sandy took several modules relating to Developmental, Child and Abnormal Psychology, where she gained a deeper understanding of developmental disorders and management of these conditions. These developmental disorders include Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), externalizing disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD), as well as internalizing disorders such as Anxiety and Depression.
Sandy previously worked as an Associate Psychologist at a Child Development Clinic at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital. During her 2.5 years of work as an Associate Psychologist, she worked with children ranging from 0 – 7 years old with developmental difficulties, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Global Developmental Delay (GDD), Dyslexia, Selective Mutism (SM) and learning difficulties. Some of her roles include (1) conducting developmental screening, developmental assessments, cognition tests, and Dyslexia screening, and (2) scoring and interpretation of Behavioral rating scales. Sandy is also a trained facilitator for an evidence-based parenting programme (Signposts workshop), where she equips parents and caregivers with knowledge and strategies to manage their child’s difficult behaviors, such as giving clear instructions, using a visual schedule and reinforcing child’s positive behavior through positive means.
In her own time, Sandy volunteers at a Hospital and a Voluntary Welfare Organization. She supports these children, including children with special needs through numerous means – story-telling, coaching in their academic work and befriending them. Her work experiences and her knowledge gained through the academic courses over the past years had helped her tremendously in managing children’s difficult behaviours and teaching them skills needed for their future. She believes strongly that every child deserves to learn to their best capability, regardless of any pre-existing conditions they might have and she is motivated to support these children to attain that goal of independence.
